1. PM: Referendum Before Any Deal With the PA

At a meeting Thursday with Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that if a peace deal was worked out with the Palestinian Authority, Israelis would have a chance to voice their opinions of it in a referendum. “In Hebrew there is a saying, that 'Israel is not Switzerland.'” Netanyahu told his guest. “The point is that we live in very different neighborhoods. Your neighborhood is more calm and less challenging, but I don't know one Israeli who would change his country for any other.” With that, Netanyahu told Burkhalter, “there are a number of things we could learn from you, and one of them is the referendum.” Unlike Switzerland, however, Israel would conduct a referendum on just one issue – a potential agreement with the PA that would entail Israel surrendering a portion of Judea and Samaria to a PA state. In response, Burkhalter said that he was happy to be in Israel, and that if Netanyahu visited Switzerland, “to which you are invited, we will be happy to present to you our referendum system, which we have been conducting for many years. It doesn't matter when you come, there will be a referendum going on.”

2. Buffett: Israel a Top Place for Ideas, Investments

In an interview with Yisrael Hayom, American investor Warren Buffett effusively praised Israel as a great place to invest in advanced technologies and ideas. “Israel is the best place to invest because of its people,” Buffett said. “There is no other place with such high quality people, with the motivation and abilities” that Israelis have. This was especially true, he said, in Iscar, the Israeli company Buffett acquired a majority control of in 2006. At the time, Buffett bought 80% of Iscar, spending about $4 billion. On Wednesday, Buffett announced that he was buying the rest of the company, for about $2 billion. It was a most worthwhile investment, he said in the interview. “From my dealings with Iscar and from what I can see here, I can say that Israel has a very positive future. Iscar will never slow down, even if there is a slowdown in the world economy. Iscar does not stop coming out with new products and providing them to customers. With great management like you have in Iscar, you just sit back and let the car drive by itself. You don't have to do anything other than to rely on good managers,” Buffett said. “Israel needs to continue doing what it does,” Buffett said. “You are a nation of entrepreneurs with fantastic capabilities. You need to continue providing the best and most comfortable conditions for investors. This is the responsibility of the government, which ensures a positive climate for investors. When asked if he would consider investing in more Israeli companies in the future, Buffett, one of the world's richest men, said he was always looking for good investments. “I am always interested. I'm waiting for a phone call or offer. You got one?”

3. LA Man's Ponzi Scheme Targets Persian-Jewish Community

FBI agents arrested a Los Angeles man for allegedly running a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that primarily targeted the Persian-Jewish community, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Shervin Davatgarzadeh, who is also known as Shervin Neman, 31, was indicted on two counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud, for which he could serve a maximum of 20 years in prison, The Los Angeles Times reported. His victims allegedly lost more than $3 million. He was taken into custody Friday morning. Federal prosecutors say than Neman claimed to be a successful investor while actually running the Ponzi scheme from the summer of 2010 to June of 2012, according to The Los Angeles Times. He solicited money from investors “with false claims that their money would be used to purchase foreclosed real estate and stocks, including pre-initial public offering shares,” the press release said. Instead, prosecutors say he just took the money for himself or repaid earlier victims. The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil complaint against Neman and his firm, Neman Financial Inc., in April 2012, according to the paper. A month later, he allegedly solicited $2 million from another investor to pay his lawyers and earlier victims.

4. Top Official: Iran Threat Greater Than Ever

A top security source told Channel Ten that despite appearances to the contrary, Israel's military option on Iran was very much alive, and that Iran was reaching the point where construction of a nuclear weapon was within reach. The official, whose identity was kept under wraps, is considered a highly placed, highly reliable source. The official said that Iran has in recent months “dramatically” increased its uranium enrichment capabilities, the result of the installation of new centrifuges. With the new equipment, Iran should be able to soon enrich as much as 200 kilos of uranium. With that amount, the source said, Iran would be able to easily equip a nuclear arsenal. The decision on whether Iran will go in this direction is in the hands of Iran's spiritual leader, Ali Khamenei. Israel has excellent intelligence on what is going on in Iran and is aware of the danger of the current situation, the source said. “If we see they are moving towards the 'red line' of nuclear capability, all options are on the table – even before they reach this point.” The official made the comments in light of the analysis by former IDF Intelligence chief Amos Yadlin last weekend, who said that in his estimation Iran had already passed that 'red line.' According to the official, Iran “has not yet crossed the line, but is getting closer to it methodically.” The official also commented on the speech made by Ehud Olmert last weekend in New York, in which the former prime minister minimized the Iranian threat. Olmert said that “I, too, know how to evaluate the dangers. The threat has been greatly exaggerated in statements by the government, and large sums of money have been spent on strange missions that should not have taken place.” The official slammed Olmert for his comments. “How does he dare to minimize the Iranian threat, and to do in abroad? He is hurting Israel's ability to recruit others around the world against the Iranian threat,” the official added.

5. Flash Flood Overtakes Saudi Arabia, Kills 16

Sixteen people have been killed and three more are missing in Saudi Arabia after downpours caused flash floods in several areas of the desert kingdom, the civil defense authorities said on Wednesday, the AFP news agency reported. Two others died in flash floods in neighboring Oman, local media reported, as cloudbursts swept across most Gulf countries. The official Saudi SPA state news agency quoted a civil defense statement as saying people died in several areas including in the capital Riyadh, Baha in the south, Hail in the north and in the west. Earlier on Wednesday, the kingdom said 13 people had died and four were missing but later the civil defense statement updated the toll saying "the number of dead bodies retrieved until midday has risen to 16". It urged people to avoid wadi valleys and plains that have been flooded by heavy rainfall that began on Friday. The vast Arabian Peninsula country has not experienced such a high volume of rainfall for 25 years.

6. Widow of Terror Victim: If the State Doesn't Respond, We Will

Tzofia Borovsky, the widow of Evyatar Borovsky who was murdered by a terrorist at the Tapuach Junction on Tuesday, is calling on the State of Israel to respond to the terror attack which killed her husband. "He always thought about whether to use a gun and I was always tense. The terrorist should have been killed on the spot,” she said painfully in an interview with Channel 10 News on Wednesday. “Terrorists should be killed, not left alive.” Borovosky added, "The murder could have been prevented if there had been a security barrier there. The Arabs are never checked and have free access. They can come in carrying anything. It makes no sense that the State cannot guard the residents of Judea and Samaria.” She noted that “an official response by the State to the terror attack would be best, but if there is no response from the State, there will be a response on our part." Also on Wednesday, iconic nationalist activist Baruch Marzel said that the only way to deal with terrorism is to kill terrorists. “This terrorist should never even have reached the hospital,” he said. “We need to educate our soldiers and police officers that the State of Israel has no interest in keeping a terrorist alive. A living terrorist is a burden – he gets medical treatment, dozens of police officers guard him, the medical system invests in him the amounts of money it doesn’t have to invest in other people.” Samaria Regional Council head Gershon Mesika criticized the Israeli government following the fatal terrorist attack, saying, “This despicable murder was the direct result of inadequate action on rock-throwing terrorism, of opening the checkpoints, and of treating daily terrorist attacks as ‘disturbances.’” One month ago Mesika urged the IDF to begin responding to rock attacks with live fire, and warned that the lack of a harsh response was creating “anarchy.”

7. Terrorists Should be Put to Death, Says Nationalist Activist

The only way to deal with terrorism is to kill terrorists, iconic nationalist activist Baruch Marzel said on Wednesday. Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Marzel said that the terrorist who killed Evyatar Borovsky at the Tapuach Junction on Tuesday should not have even been left alive by the Border Guard officers who captured him. “This terrorist should never even have reached the hospital,” he said. “We need to educate our soldiers and police officers that the State of Israel has no interest in keeping a terrorist alive. A living terrorist is a burden – he gets medical treatment, dozens of police officers guard him, and the medical system invests in him the amounts of money it doesn’t have to invest in other people.” Marzel added, “This cowardly murderer was released from prison six months ago. We should ensure they are never released. But had the Border Police taken care of him, this attack would not have happened. When I was in the army we never took prisoners. We always tried to bring the enemy to a state of a lifeless body, so that neither he nor his children will do more harm to the people of Israel.” He said that targeted killings and the death penalty is the only way deal with terrorists. "There’s talk all the time, especially in Netanyahu’s new government, about more deals to release terrorists, but we need to ensure that all murderers are put to death so that they cannot murder again. A low-life terrorist who left five orphans and a widow should receive only one punishment - capital punishment - and not be hospitalized.” Samaria Regional Council head Gershon Mesika criticized the Israeli government following the fatal terrorist attack Tuesday at Tapuach, saying, “This despicable murder was the direct result of inadequate action on rock-throwing terrorism, of opening the checkpoints, and of treating daily terrorist attacks as ‘disturbances.’” On Wednesday, Mesika moved his offices to the Tapuach Junction. He also asked Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe “Bogie” Yaalon to allow the construction of a new Jewish town “as a fitting response to the increase in terrorism in Judea and Samaria.”

8. Moshe Zar: What the Borovsky Murder Says About Us

Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Moshe Zar, one of the first pioneers to build his home in Samaria, said that the murder of Evyatar Borovsky required that Israel take stock of its policy and attitude towards Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria. The murder was a direct result of Israel's policy of “preferring not to make waves,” and to keeping the lid on tension. But the result, he said, was a lack of security for Jews in Judea and Samaria, and in the rest of Israel, he said. “To our sorrow and shame the the system is based on the policies advocated by Peace Now,” said Zar, who was among the first to purchase large plots of land in central Samaria. “They remove roadblocks and give the Arabs weapons. Is this the way a strong, proud state operates?” The proper response to the attack on Borovksy was not individual “price tag” acts, in which individuals protest the poor security situation, but proper action by the government. “Burning down a field in response is not an answer. The government must take action. They must stop this insane policy. How is it possible that no one checked this terrorist? This is what happens when you remove roadblocks.” Referring to his own personal tragedy in which his son Gilad was killed in a terrorist attack, Zar said “I cried at Evyatar's funeral, as I am a father who is still mourning for his son. I feel terrible for these orphans who lost lost their father in a moment. Is this the way a proud country acts? Instead of taking the terrorist to the hospital after he was shot, they should have ripped him to 1,000 pieces. He will get better, then go to prison where he will live better than ever,” Zar said.
