‘Yasser Arafat Street’ – Soon in Israel?

The Israeli-Arab city of Sakhnin is planning to name streets for two of Israel’s most famous enemies, according to MK Miri Regev (Likud Beytenu).

City officials in Sakhnin are planning to name a street for deceased Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, “a mass murderer and terrorist,” she said. A second street is to be named for Gamel Abdel Nasser, “The Egyptian President who took a hawkish stance against Israel, called to destroy it, closed the Suez Canal and began the Six Day War.”

Arafat waged a long campaign of terrorism against Israel. In the 1990s he agreed to negotiate with the Jewish state, but a short time later he launched the “Intifada” terror war in which several thousand Israelis were killed or suffered life-changing injuries in suicide bombings and other attacks.

“This isn’t a dream,” Regev wrote on Facebook. “There are those in Sakhnin who think that in the name of freedom of expression, Israel should compromise our values as a Jewish, Zionist nation.”

Regev said she will fight the plan to honor Arafat. “There is no dispute that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. But will Israel, in the name of those values, give honor to her cruelest enemies? No way,” she wrote.

2. Russian Official: Missile Systems Sale ‘A Message to America’
by Maayana Miskin Russian Official: Weapons Sale ‘A Message to U.S.’

Russia’s decision to send S-300 missile systems to Syria is, in part, a message to the United States, according to the head of the Russian parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Alexei Pushkov.

Russia opposes outside interference in Syria’s ongoing civil war, he explained, according to Walla. “We’re opposed to no-fly zones, because they are the first step toward aerial attack,” he said.

“Syria asked Russia to help it defend itself from aerial assault,” he added.

In early May at least two Syrian military targets were hit in what Syria has said were Israeli airstrikes.

According to the Wall Street Journal Russia has sent at least 12 warships to patrol near a Russian Navy base in Syria. According to the report, American and European leaders have widely interpreted the move as a warning to the West and to Israel not to interfere in Syria.

The reported deployment is one of the Russian Navy’s largest since the end of the Cold War.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stated that Russia agreed to the S-300 sale based on previous agreements. Russia does not intend to sell Syria new weapons, he said, but will fulfill old commitments.

“We do not want our reputation as reliable suppliers of weapons to be affected,” he said.

4. Police Nab 2,000 Weapons in Northern Israel
by Maayana Miskin Police Nab 2,000 Weapons in Northern Israel

Police have uncovered more than 2,000 weapons that were held illegally in northern Israel as part of an operation to reduce illegal weapons ownership.

Police in all northern districts took part in the operation, which saw officers working together with detectives, Border Police, canine units and the Yassam special forces.

Many of the illegally owned weapons were found after simply checking on the fate of weapons that were once legally owned. Officers found many owners who kept their weapons despite letting their registration expire, and children of legal weapons owners who kept a deceased parent’s firearm.

Some of the weapons had been kept for sentimental reasons, among them firearms dating back to the 1940s.

Northern District Police Commander Major-General Roni Atia said, “We will continue to invest our time and resources in locating and collecting weapons that are being held illegally, and whoever is caught with illegal weapons will be brought to justice.”

A new nationwide initiative aimed at gathering illegal weapons began this week. The initiative began with a grace period during which anyone who is in possession of an unauthorized weapon may turn in their weapon to police without facing charges, on the condition that the weapon was never used to commit a crime.

5. Rocket Victim’s Brother to Wed
by Maayana Miskin Rocket Victim’s Brother to Wed

The Abukasis family from Sderot will celebrate the wedding Sunday of Tamir Yaakov. Eight years ago Tamir survived a terrorist rocket attack thanks to his sister Ella, 17, who died in the attack.

Ella threw herself over Tamir, saving his life. A piece of shrapnel hit her in the head, and she died several days later.

The children’s father Yonatan told Arutz Sheva that the family wants to send a message to terrorists in Gaza. “We want to publicize our joy, to let the terrorists know that they succeed,” he explained.

“They wanted to sow fear, destruction, and death, and we are creating growth and building new homes in Israel,” he continued. “Am Yisrael chai,” [The people of Israel live – ed.] he added.

The wedding will be joyful but also sad, he said. “There will be excitement alongside painful memories. Our daughter was killed, but we are marrying Tamir to Noy, and four months ago we married off Ron. The terrorists’ evil did not succeed,” he said.

“Ella is not with us, but her spirit and her soul accompany us,” he added.

Two years after Ella's death a Bnei Akiva branch and goodwill center was built in Sderot and dedicated to her memory.

6. Tens of Thousands of Hareidim Protest Enlistment
by Gil Ronen Tens of Thousands of Hareidim Protest Enlistment

Tens of thousands of hareidi Jews took part Thursday in a Jerusalem protest against plans to enlist hareidi men into the military.

The multitudes gathered next to the IDF's Jerusalem enlistment center, where security was beefed up to prevent any attempt by the protesters to break in.

Heads of the Eida Hareidit, which organized the protest, spoke against Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Economics Minister Naftali Bennett, whom they accused of promulgating "harsh decrees" against the hareidim.

Police said that the demonstrators attacked policemen, set garbage bins on fire and threw rocks.

Most of the hareidi public did not take part in the protest because leaders like Rabbi Steinman, the Belzer Rebbe and the Gerrer Rebbe, currently favor quiet dialogue with the authorities over open confrontation.

7. Largest Syrian Brigade Nears Breaking Point
by Gil Ronen Largest Syrian Brigade Nears Breaking Point

Numerous units from the rebel Syrian army have been trying since the morning hours Thursday to smash the 52nd Armored Brigade of the Syria army, Arab news sources reported.

The 52nd Armored Brigade is the main fighting force in the Dera'a area in southern Syria.

Some reports say that the rebels have achieved partial control of the region. The 232nd Battalion has reportedly fallen into rebel hands. This means that the largest armored brigade in the Syria army is near its breaking point.

Al-Ahbar of Kuwait reported that rebels used light arms to bring down a surveillance UAV belonging to the Syrian Air Force in the streets of Homs. The UAV had been assisting Hizbullah ground forces near Al-Kutzair.

8. Video: Missile Misses Tank by Inches
by Gil Ronen Video: Missile Misses Tank by Inches

An anti-tank missile just missed a tank operated by rebel forces in Syria, as the embedded video shows.

The video, uploaded Wednesday, shows a rarely-documented moment in which an anti-tank missiles whizzes by, apparently just a few feet away from the tank it was aimed at.

The tank was shelling the military airbase of Abu Duhur.

The missile can be seen and heard at about the 1:12 minute mark. Immediately after the near-miss, one of the rebel fighters instructs the tank's crew to drive back and reposition the tank at a lower and more protected position.
